Biography
Dr. Nalin Mehta came to the US from India over 32 years ago as a legal immigrant. He spent five years in New Jersey completing a medical residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in oncology. That is where he met and married his wife, Sue.
They moved to Stanly County, NC in June of 1981, started a medical practice and became involved in the organizational meetings of hospice. He was honored to be asked to serve as the first medical director of Hospice of Stanly County and served in that position for 25 years. Later, he also was asked to serve as American Red Cross medical director where he served for 15 years and was on the board of directors for the American Cancer Society. He also served as the Medical Director for Home Care of the Carolinas for 15 years and the Stanly County Home Heath Advisory Board for 15 years as the chairperson. He was also the Chief of Staff at Stanly Regional Medical Center and facilitated the Tumor Board at Stanly Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Mehta has received numerous local, state, and national awards for community service. In 1995 he was honored to receive the Governor’s Award for Community Health Education. Shortly after that he was awarded the National Patient Care Award. Teaching and encouraging others to live a healthy life style and prevent disease has been his proven philosophy. He also founded the Stanly County diabetic support group in the early 1990s and ran it for many years until the Stanly Regional Medical Center incorporated it into their health education program. He still serves as medical director of diabetes education at the hospital. Other awards he has received include the Sue Massey Award for Hospice Service, the Physician of the Year award from Home Care of the Carolinas, the Exceptional Service Award from Hospice of Stanly County, and the Abby Shumate Award for Cancer Education.
Nalin and his wife Sue, a nurse practitioner have worked together in a shared medical practice since its beginning in 1981. They have two sons who were born, raised, and educated in the public schools in Stanly County. Their older son Drew is a youth minister and his wife Katie is a hospice nurse. His younger son Jay is an environmental geologist and is married to Brittany, a third grade teacher. Nalin and Sue are very active in their local church, First Assembly of Albemarle, where they have been members since 1981.
Public service has always been a priority in his life so in 2004 he took the next step and successfully ran for a seat on the Stanly County Board of Commissioners where he continues to serve today.
Dr. Mehta has recently formed Hope Medical Associates in Albemarle, NC with Dr. Kenneth Shank to share in responsibilities. This will free him up to serve in state office.
